Feminism, By Elizabeth Cady Stanton And Lucretia Mott

Before feminism, an American woman s life was like a prison. A woman could be forced to stay at home, abused mentally and physically, and had no rights in the eyes of the law. In the 19th century, the first feminist convention was permitted: the Seneca Falls convention for women’s advocates in New York. The convention was held by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. These women addressed the idea of improving the rights of women. Accomplishing the overall idea, sixty-eight women and thirty-two men signed the Declaration of Sentiments, the document that outlines the grievances and the agenda for the Woman’s Rights Movement. American women will forever be indebted to the feminist movement (Lee 135, 139). Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s doctrine, The Declaration of Sentiments, have lead the women s rights movement to success. A resolution that the document states is â€Å"that woman is man’s equal, was intended to be so by the Creator, and the highest good of the race demands that she should be recognized as such†(Stanton). In 2016, women are born equal to man in the eyes of the law, a woman can participate in anything a man can. Women in America obtained the right to vote in 1920. Women continued to make progress during World War II, when millions of women traded in their housewife life into entering the workforce. 1963 was the year the Equal Pay Act was passed by Congress. Similarly, a year later, the Civil Rights Act outlawed sex discrimination in the United States, and added a bill that prohibits sex discrimination specifically in schools (â€Å"Feminism† 120). The se acts were all inspired and accomplished with the Declaration of Sentiments. American women have accomplished every task assigned to the feminist movement.
