Terrorist Attack The terrorist attacks on September 11th have repeatedly been related to Pearl Harbor. In many ways, the analogy is apparent. Just as that attack initiated us into World War II, the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon have initiated us into a new kind of war, against terrorism. But starting this sort of borderless war holds great risks, not only to the armed forces commanded to fight but also to core national values. In this way, Pearl Harbor brings other distressing memories, those of the internment.Similar to the explosions on the East Coast, the bombing of Pearl Harbor on 12-7, devastated our beliefs of national security. How could this have taken place? Average individuals, famous journalists, and government officials soon started criticizing at the Japanese in America. Viewing these "Orientals" as terminally foreign, speaking foreign languages, effect foreign cultures, active foreign religions (Shinto, Buddhism), American society could not differentiate between the Empire of Japan and Americans of Japanese crash.United StatesAs General DeWitt, in charge of the Western Defense Command, put it, "A Jap's a Jap." As government reports quickly to the wrapping up that Japanese Americans aided and supported the attack, the wheels of the internment machinery began revolving.On February 19, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, which approved armed forces in the Western U.S. to issue no matter what orders were essential for national security. Although provoked by DeWitt's threateningly titled "Final Recommendation" for mass internment, the Order suitably made no declaration of race or ethnicity. In March, Congress criminalized insubordination of military rules issued pursuant to the executive order. CD Evaluation A few months ago I was flipping stations on my radio while driving to Louisville and came across a station I hadn’t noticed before, Trance. First, let me explain, I have a XM satellite radio in my car so radio stations are grouped by categories: Rock and Roll, Hip-hop, blues etc†¦ As I was saying, I came across the station Trance and foe some odd reason I never noticed it before. The music sounded very familiar, I realized that this was the music that I here in dance clubs all the time and absolutely love it. At that point I decided to make a detour and get some of this music for myself, so I headed to Best Buy. There are certain moments in a young clubber’s life that we would love to forget. That long line for a single restroom, ten dollars for a bottle of water, and the list goes on and on. But there are plenty of others that we’d love to hold on to and the music has to be number one. For that I turned to the artist that was displayed on my stereo , Nick Warren. Upon arriving at Best Buy I wasn’t sure were to look for Trance so once I got in the store I quickly found a clerk and asked were to go. The salesclerk was a nice guy, providing me with all the information I could handle. We came upon the techno section and he told me to look for Global Underground. It took a few minutes, but I found it and to my amazement there were over forty selections of the label. Each CD was by a different artist and most were all in different cities and hardly ever the same city twice. I was absolutely amazed. I never realized trance was that big. The salesclerk opened my eyes when he started to explain that trance/techno is everywhere and in every club around the world, I figured that much considering I have been to hundreds of dance clubs and this was the type of music that was played. I quickly found Nick Warren, paid for it, and ran to the car so I could indulge myself in some ambient tones for a while, ... Language of Advertising - Essay Example The entire goal of an advertisement is to inform someone of a product or service. Advertising also tells a reader something that they do not already know and through the use of design, captures attention. Advertising is primarily used, however, to create a cause and effect relationship between the company or business that placed the advertisement and then a reaction that is done by someone that saw the advertisement. O'Neill acknowledges that an advertisement will not work unless, â€Å"it captures our attention,† (O'Neill, 2006, 125). Advertising attempts to get people to do something or consider something that they normally would not without the additional information. Language in advertising is very important. The wording, as well as the design, can make or break the advertisement. In the case of a print advertisement, it is generally the aesthetic design and appeal of the visual advertisement itself which captures the attention of the reader. Next, it is the message that m ust captivate and compel the reader into taking action. That is why language is so important. In some ways, it can manipulate and in others it can persuade. The message makes the whole difference. O'Neill said that there were types of languages that were usually displayed in an advertisement such as a promise, a headline, sex appeal, a testimonial or a payoff statement (O'Neill, 2006). . None of these descriptions really tell how the language of the advertisement in question works. It makes a claim that it is â€Å"better† at something but that is it. Wording must be simple is the first part of the thesis. First off, words must be simple enough and grammatically correct so that a person can read them. A person needs to keep their advertisement simple so that it appeals to the reader. If the reader has to look up a word in a dictionary just to determine the meaning of the advertisement, then the ad is completely a lost cause. While looking at the advertisement of choice, it sa ys, â€Å"No other gasoline protects better. The Shell Nitrogen Enriched Advantage.† This simply states that the Shell petroleum products are better than the others. They seem to have a project that they want to promote to sell the nitrogen enriched segment. The way that this is worded is easy. There is nothing to look up and it is obvious what company is promoting the advertisement and does not provide any other information. Saying less words is more is another segment of the thesis at hand. Clearly, â€Å"No other gasoline protects better. The Shell Nitrogen Enriched Advantage,† statement clearly sums it up. In fact, it sums it up so much that it really does not do anything compelling. There is no description. There is no reason why and there is no instruction as to what the Shell Nitrogen Enriched Advantage is. Most people are to take action when a statement like this is offered but in this case, they would need to know what that means. The name Shell is a petroleum and fuel company that provides gasoline. Nitrogen enriched makes it sound as though the product is environmentally friendly. However, the details are almost too vague. As a reader, there is nothing about it that makes a clear memorable statement. The third part of the thesis would be to use call to action phrases. This is another area where this advertisement fails miserably. All it does is state a fact. â€Å"No other gasoline protects better.† So what?
